Now a days computer has become a part of life. The nature of our work compels us to sit before the computer for hours and there is no escape from it. Working with computers for long hours make us vulnerable to some eye problems. The most common among them is dry eyes. Due to exposure to the computer screen for a long time the tears starts drying causing irritation and redness in the eyes. When working with computers we look straight into the screen without blinking, as we blink less, tears starts evaporating making the eyes dry. The problem becomes worse with the contact lens wearers. Some symptoms of dry eyes are persistent irritation in the eyes, redness, itchiness, intolerance to light etc. When we look at the computer screen for a long hour without taking any breaks, our eyes muscles fight hard to let us stay focus. In this process the inner muscles of our eyes hardens which leads to strained eyes. It can make your eyes feel uncomfortable and sometimes dry. Vision related head ache occurs due to the glare from the computer or because of the poor lighting of the work place. In this condition we feel a strong headache on the front part of our head.

Ways to tackle the computers relate eye problems:

  • To prevent dry eye sit at a distance of 25 inch from the screen, blink your eyes more often while working with computers to moisten them with tears. Use an anti glare screen. Give your eyes a break after every 20 minutes. To get relieve from the vision related head ache give your eyes some rest for some time. Tilt the computer below your eye level it helps in minimizing the evaporation of tears. LCD or plasma monitor are better for the eyes because of the soothing nature of their pictures.
  • Rub your hands against each other till they become warm. Place your palms on your eyes for 60 seconds and feel the warmth in your eyes. This procedure helps your eyes to relax. Repeat this exercise two or three times whenever you feel necessary.
  • While working look at things placed at a distance from your work station. It helps in improving the focus. Take visual breaks of at least 5 minutes every single hour.
  • Adjust the lighting of your room to reduce the reflection on the screen. An anti reflective coating on the lenses of your glasses can reduce the problem of vision from bright lights.
  • Close your eyes then splash water on your face during the breaks. This helps to reduce the eye strain by soothing them.
  • To reduce the strain and puffiness of your eyes. Place refrigerated used tea bags on your eyes for a few minutes
  • Eat fresh green vegetables and citrus fruits. Include Vitamin A, C and E supplements in your daily diet.
  • Drink lot of water to prevent the dehydration of the body. Dehydration can lead to puffiness of eyes.
