Provide your car with regular maintenance, fill it with high quality fuel, fix problems before they get worse, and you will have a car that runs for years. The same can be said about your teeth. In the automobile business, those that do adhere to the manual’s recommendation are applying smart car ownership. In the dental industry, it’s called http://www.proudtosmile.com/general-dentistry.html”> Preventative Dentistry and that’s just as smart.

Like a car owner who works hand-in-hand with his mechanic, so will the dental patient work in concert with his or her dentist to maintain good oral health. Dentists can guide patients in how to care for and protect their teeth, but ultimately the patient must take personal responsibility and form good dental hygiene habits early to avert dental decay and periodontal disease.

A dentist will help instruct the patient in how to clean their teeth properly at each dental exam. And, when the dentist finds more plaque than normal, the patient will be instructed about the proper method of brushing. When the dentist sees excess tartar between teeth, the dentist or dental hygienist will encourage more flossing. All of this education and care instills the need for habits that leave us more confident that our teeth will last as long as our bodies.

During these regular dental exams, dentists may also suggest other dental restoration that can be performed by a cosmetic dentist to enhance your smile, like dental implants, orthodontics, and full mouth restoration.

Preventative Treatment Begins at Home
The march of tooth decay stops at home, because you are the first line of defense against cavities, gum disease and tooth loss. By following five simple steps, you can put your dentist in the driver’s seat to pinpoint obstacles that possibly line the roadway to a lifetime of good oral health. When these simple steps are followed, dental patients can enjoy healthy teeth and gums.

Brush twice a day
Floss often
Eat a well-balanced diet
Limit between meal snacks and especially those that contain sugar
See your dentist twice a year for teeth cleaning and dental exams

Preventative Dentistry Continues at the Dental Office

If you’ve maintained good oral habits in the six months since your last visit, the likelihood that your dentist discovers a problem will be lessened. However, your dentist will perform a number of evaluations to ensure that your next six months after your present dental exam will be pain-free and cavity-free. Your dentist will perform several evaluations to ascertain if problems have surfaced. Those steps include:

Evaluating X-rays for evidence of hidden cavities
Examining gums for evidence of receding gums and any gum disease
Checking for oral cancer evidence
Recommending procedures to correct any present dental problems

The face is the reflection of a person and his smile is therefore the most important part and as rightly said “smile can do wonders”, people are getting increasingly conscious of their smiles. However the task becomes slightly difficult if one has stained or discolored teeth. The reason for this could vary from person to person, but the general consensus is that having lots of tea, coffee, tobacco or smoking can lead to such problems. These are aggravated if proper oral care is not taken. The teeth whitening process has emerged as the best option available to get whiter teeth without much ado.

Teeth whitening can be achieved either professionally, through a dentist or even at home by using the do-it-yourself kits and other home remedies. However the remedies that are available at home do not last very long and if there is a slight mismatch of teeth color, the results would not be very pleasing. Therefore it is better to get teeth whitening done professionally. However with the huge costs associated with the dental treatments at the dentists and the frequent visits to the dentist acts as a deterrent for many. But now with the professional teeth cleaning and whitening kits available for home use, the problem has been solved.

Laser teeth whitening system

Earlier the laser teeth whitening treatment was only available at the dentists, but this new laser teeth whitening system for home use is a convenient way to get the desired teeth whitening treatment at home and at a fraction of the cost. The system consists of a light system, carbamide peroxide gels, thermo forming mouth trays and a remineralizing gel. The system works on the concept of the gel being applied to the teeth and with the laser light the teeth can be whitened within an hour with noticeable results. The laser teeth whitening system comes with varying strength of teeth whitening gels. The highest strength is of 36%. Therefore depending on the extent of the teeth whitening needed, the required gel strength can be bought. A very successful teeth whitening product, the laser system is different from other products available for home as it produces instant results and can be used for all teeth.

Other home treatments

Besides the most advanced and professional laser teeth whitening system mentioned above, there are many other products and remedies that can be used at home. These are the teeth whitening strips, teeth whitening gels, teeth whitening trays and other home remedies like use of lemon juice with salt, paste of hydrogen peroxide with baking powder, rubbing of strawberries and by simply rinsing your mouth with Listerine or hydrogen peroxide.

Therefore there are many products that can be used at home for teeth whitening, but each has its own advantages and drawbacks. However one can choose a remedy depending on the extent of discoloration. For severe staining that cannot be done away by the simple home remedies one can opt for the laser whitening system which offers the best results within a few hours and at a fraction of the cost when compared to professional teeth whitening done by a dentist.

Dry Sockets | Dental Care

Posted in Lips Care on March 10th, 2010 by Amanda – Be the first to comment

A common worry for patients facing a tooth extraction is the dreaded “dry socket.” While dry sockets do occur, they are far from inevitable and often avoidable with proper care.

When a tooth is removed it leaves a hole in the bone (the tooth socket). As the socket fills with blood, the blood congeals forming a protective clot that covers the exposed bone left by the extraction. If the blood clot is dislodged after the bleeding has stopped, another clot is unable to form. This may lead to alveolitis, or dry socket.

Without a protective blood clot, the freshly exposed nerve endings in the tooth socket are left to sense every change in the mouth’s environment. Changes in the mouth can be from food, liquid, and even cooler air entering the mouth when the jaws are opened. Each change stimulates the exposed nerves resulting in extreme pain and discomfort. Sometimes, even without any stimulation, the nerves will be stimulated and will fire pain signals to the brain.

Dry sockets are treated by placing a medicated, synthetic clot in the tooth socket. The artificial clot, made from gauze or a spongy material called gelfoam, is usually replaced every day or every other day. The treatment is uncomfortable, requiring a local anesthetic when changing the artificial clot. If the pain is severe enough, a prescription analgesic is prescribed until the tooth socket heals enough for the pain to start to subside.

Painful dry sockets can be avoided by carefully following postoperative instructions given to you by your dentist. Faithfully following the instructions and careful treatment of the extraction site, should lead to a quick and relatively painless healing period.
